Unifor 715-M Education Bursary

Purpose

To support post-secondary education for children or relatives of members in good standing of Unifor local 715-M, recognizing academic effort, community involvement, and financial need.

Eligibility

Who can apply


Applicants must:

  • Be a relative or dependent of a union member in good standing
  • Be one of the following:
    • Child or stepchild
    • Grandchild
    • Niece or nephew
    • Legal dependent

The sponsoring member must be:

  • An active member in good standing


Education Requirements

Applicants must be enrolled in or accepted to:

  • University or college
  • Trade or apprenticeship program
  • Recognized technical or vocational institution

Both full-time and part-time students are eligible.

Proof of enrollment or acceptance is required.


Limits

  • Applicants may apply in multiple years, but cannot win in consecutive years
  • One bursary per immediate family per year
  • Previous recipients must disclose past awards


Ineligible Applicants

  • Sponsor not in good standing
  • Incomplete or late applications


Committee members with relatives or dependants applying for a bursary are not required to abstain from voting unless the number of applicants exceeds the number of bursaries available.

Application Requirements

A complete application must include:

  • Completed application form
  • Proof of enrollment or acceptance
  • Written responses (max 250 words each):
    • Why is post-secondary education important to you?
    • How will this bursary help you?


Optional Information

  • Community involvement
  • Work experience
  • Extracurriculars or achievements
    (Optional items are not required and will not disadvantage applicants.)

Submission

  • Submit electronically (preferred) or by mail
  • A clear annual deadline will be set
  • Late applications are not accepted

Selection Process

  1. Eligibility Check
    Incomplete or ineligible applications are removed.
  2. Scoring
    Committee members independently score applications using a standard rubric.
  3. Ranking
    Scores are averaged and applicants ranked.
  4. Selection
    Top three applicants receive bursaries.
    If a recipient declines, the next-ranked applicant is selected.
  5. Approval & Notification
    Final approval (if required), then written notification to applicants.


Conflict of Interest

Committee members must declare conflicts and recuse themselves from related applications.

Scoring Process (100 Point System)

1. Educational Goals & Motivation (40 pts)
Clarity, effort, and connection to future goals.

2. Financial Need (30 pts)
Extent to which the bursary will provide meaningful support.

3. Community Involvement / Work Ethic (20 pts)
Work, volunteering, or leadership.

4. Application Quality (10 pts)
Completeness, clarity, and effort.


Scores are averaged. Ties may be resolved through discussion or a secondary method. 

Awards & Payment

  • Three bursaries of $500 awarded annually


Payment

  • Paid to the student
  • Issued after enrollment is confirmed


If Declined

  • Award goes to the next-ranked applicant

Recognition & Privacy

Recipients may be recognized through union communications (with consent). Only names and programs/institutions may be shared. The scoring process and committee deliberations related to bursary applications are confidential and will not be disclosed to applicants.

Applicants can opt out of recognition without affecting eligibility.

Record Keeping

The union will securely maintain records of:

  • Recipients
  • Award amounts
  • Year awarded
